TRIPPOCKET FIELD GUIDE

Start your first shared trip

A practical guide to recording payments, choosing who shares each cost, and understanding your trip balances.

One person books the hotel. Someone else pays for dinner. A third traveler covers the taxi. TripPocket keeps those payments together and works out each traveler’s share, so the group can settle up from the same record.

1. Create the trip and add the people

Sign in with Google on the website and choose Create a trip. Give it a name that the group will recognize, such as “Chiang Mai weekend,” and add the travelers whose costs you will track. Use the trip’s currency and time zone consistently when reviewing the records.

A traveler name is a person in the split; it is not automatically an invitation to access the trip. If someone needs to add expenses from their own account, use the sharing controls and approve the right person. You can also keep the notebook yourself and record payments made by the whole group.

2. Record what happened, not just the total

Choose Add Expense. Give the item a useful description, enter when it happened and select its currency. Then answer two separate questions: who paid? and who is sharing? They need not be the same people.

Example · Dinner for three

Arun pays THB 1,800 for a dinner shared by Arun, Mina and Jo. Record Arun as the payer and all three as sharers. Each person’s share is THB 600. Arun’s payment does not make the meal free for the other two; it creates a balance in his favor.

If two people paid parts of the same bill, enter both payers and their amounts. If someone did not join the meal, leave them out of that expense’s sharers. For personal items on a shared receipt, use the custom-share controls and check the preview before saving. Our worked splitting guide walks through the numbers.

A receipt photo is optional. It can help the group understand an entry later. Review any suggested amount or currency from a receipt scan before you save; a cropped image, tip or unfamiliar receipt layout can make a suggestion inaccurate.

3. Check History as the trip goes on

History lets you review recorded expenses and open individual entries. Clear descriptions are more useful than a string of identical “food” entries: “Saturday dinner at the night market” is easier to recognize. Record the original currency instead of converting a bill from memory.

Correct mistakes in the existing expense rather than adding a second copy. Permissions depend on your role and the entry’s author. Creation and edit history help the group understand changes. A receipt may be visible to accepted trip members, so check it for information you do not want to share.

4. Read Balance before making a repayment

The total a traveler paid and the total they should bear are different figures. Their balance is the difference. Someone who paid more than their share is owed money; someone who paid less owes money. Suggested transfers can reduce the number of repayments without changing anyone’s final share.

For trips with more than one currency, choose the currency and conversion date for the summary and check that the required rates are available. A missing rate means the converted total is not ready. Use the currency guide to understand the assumptions before settling.

Agree the final entries with the group before paying each other. TripPocket’s suggested repayments are calculations, not bank transfers. The app does not move money or confirm that an external payment has arrived.

Practical questions

Can I use the guides without an account?

Yes. These guides and the example calculator are public. Sign-in is needed for your private trips and shared cloud records.

Will my trip appear here?

No. The names and amounts in these guides are fictional examples. Your real trips remain in the account workspace and are shared through the trip’s access controls.

Can I work without an internet connection?

Saving and synchronizing require an internet connection. The app may show cached information, but do not assume a change has reached the group until it has synchronized.

Where can I get help?

See About & help for support. Describe the screen and problem, but do not send passwords, verification codes or unredacted receipt images.
